With all his Skills and bit of Luck, Rory McIlroy Claims the FedEx Cup

Rory McIlroy finally won the FedEx Cup when he least expected it.

McIlroy was three shots behind with three holes to play Sunday in the Tour Championship. Nearly two hours later, he holed a 15-foot birdie putt on the fourth extra hole to win at East Lake in a playoff and claim the $10-million FedEx Cup bonus.

In its 10th year, the FedEx Cup never had a finish like this.

McIlroy won on the 16th hole, where his stunning rally began in regulation when he holed out from 137 yards for eagle and then made birdie on the final hole for a 64 to join a three-man playoff with Ryan Moore (64) and Kevin Chappell (66). Chappell was eliminated with a par on the first extra hole.

Rory Mcilroy will continue the momentum to the Ryder cup which begins on September 30th at the Hazeltine National Golf Club in Chaska, Minnesota.

In Davis Love III we trust

Fowler, Kuchar, Holmes picked for USA Ryder Cup team.

United States Ryder Cup captain Davis Love III made his first three captain’s picks on Monday, adding J.B. Holmes, Rickie Fowler and Matt Kuchar to the team that hopes to end Europe’s winning streak.

Each of the three has prior Ryder Cup experience, with Holmes making the team for the second time. His only previous appearance was in 2008 at Valhalla, the last time the U.S. won the Ryder Cup.

Kuchar will make his fourth consecutive Ryder Cup appearance, and Fowler is playing for the third time — but his first on American soil.

Love said he and vice-captains Tiger Woods, Steve Stricker, Jim Furyk and Tom Lehman were in contact Sunday as the final round of the BMW Championship concluded.

“It was a very, very tough decision,” Love said, “but we kept coming back to these three.”

Love now has one more pick to make following the TOUR Championship. He plans to make the announcement Sunday night, Sept. 25, after completion of the FedExCup Playoff Finale.

A quick look at the 3 captain’s picks:

J.B. HOLMES

The long-hitting Holmes went 2-0-1 in his only previous Ryder Cup appearance in 2008. Comes off a tie for fourth on Sunday at the BMW Championship. His last PGA TOUR win was the 2015 Shell Houston Open.

Love on Holmes: “He’s so steady. He’s easy to pair. Got a lot of experience. He’s consistent.”

MATT KUCHAR

Making his fourth Ryder Cup appearance, with a career record of 4-5-2. Has 10 top-10 finishes on the PGA TOUR, the most of any player without a win this season. Claimed the bronze medal at the Rio Olympics.

Love on Kuchar: “Great attitude for match play. A great partner. Like J.B., he’s consistent, easy to pair.”

RICKIE FOWLER

Making his third Ryder Cup appearance, with a career record of 0-3-5. Has eight top-10 finishes on TOUR this season, including a playoff loss at the Waste Management Phoenix Open. Was knocked out of the FedExCup Playoffs after finishing 59th in the BMW Championship.

Love on Fowler: “We found no weaknesses in his game. He’s such a great teammate. He’s really confident on the big stage … brings a lot of intangibles.”

Tiger Woods for Ryder Cup captain’s pick?

Tiger Woods is already a vice captain for the 2016 U.S. Ryder Cup team. But could he be a captain’s pick for Davis Love III’s squad instead?

Woods, 40, hasn’t played since last year’s Wyndham Championship because of his two back surgeries and has dropped to No. 726 in the official world golf rankings, but he did announce a planned return to the PGA Tour last Wednesday.

Woods is expected to return to action at the 2016 Safeway Open on Oct. 13-16.

Davis love revealed three of his four captain’s picks: Rickie Fowler, J.B. Holmes and Matt Kuchar. All three picks joined the press conference via Skype and were involved in the Q&A portion.  In the conference,  Kuchar raised many eyebrows when he said, “I heard maybe even Tiger Woods could potentially be a pick,” .

“It could strictly be a rumour,” Kuchar added. “But I mean, I know he’s playing Safeway. Imagine Tiger Woods being a playing captain, absolutely incredible. That last pick is going to be quite amazing. I don’t envy Davis’ position. So it’s a tough job. But gosh, imagine that, Tiger Woods playing for Team USA, being a captain, that would be incredible.”

Love then jumped in, telling Kuchar, jokingly, to not “give away our secrets.”

“You’re going to get a call from Coach (Bill) Belichick here in a minute,” Love told Kuchar.

Love will officially announce his final pick after the Tour Championship in two weeks. As for Woods being that selection, I guess we’ll have to “wait for it …”
